Coldplay Lovers in Japan Music Video Review

Lovers in Japan Screen shot
As soon as you crack open this video you will see nothing but nostalgia from the 80s. Well, that is if you lived in the 80s. Coldplay's music video Lovers in Japan delivers some visuals that we had thought long ago died with parachute pants. Although they land the feeling of being retro, it still comes across as annoying and non-entertaining unless you really like the song. The video opens up with a great shot of the band inside an old TV. They use that old TV through the whole video and this is the only part that pulls off the retro feeling while staying innovative. Throughout most of the video the band sings and plays their instruments in a decayed alley covered in graffiti. The set looks reminiscent of reggae and the camera work is clippy and stuttery which is authentic to the old look but gets irritating fast. The writing of the words with the pen is decent but having static images in the background is just plain lazy. What really puts this video over the edge is the twirling camera! How could they have thought that was a good idea?! Spinning the camera around doesn't do anything for the video besides make you dizzy. Overall, it was a nice attempt at a leisure stroll down 80's visual lane, but it is still a street that we have been avoiding for over 10 years...and for a good reason too.
