Fall Out Boy What a Catch, Donnie Music Video Review

what a catch donnie fall out boy
I will cut right to the chase, "What a Catch Donnie" is one of the best Fall Out Boy videos ever. It's sad that it had to come out right before VMA season, but hopefully it will be noticed next year. First off the art direction and sets are superb, and probably some of the best this year. It was an immediate surprise to see the video's main star was Patrick and the other band members hardly show up in the video. This was a great design choice, the director used the idea of solitude to make the song more personal. It draws upon some imagery that will break the band out of the archetypes commonly referenced to this genre of music. Properly, Patrick's lone piano playing may be reminiscent of Elton John or Billy Joel.

The plot is mainly driven through the lonely ship captains interactions with a seagull that he nursed back to health. Using the seagull was a pure act of genious, I thought that the video was going to be extremely boring until they introduced that little guy. Another nice touch was how the director hinted at a past FOB video without being too abrasive by pulling antlers out of the water. So what makes this video less than perfect? The damn ending. Yes the video comes crashing down when they introduce a sinking boat that amounts to a dance party involving all the surviving passengers. They had a perfect chance to create some sentiment with a sad ending involving the Seagull but instead they cop out and show Pete going down with the sinking ship. I knew they had to slip him in there somewhere. Ending aside it still is a great video worth the attention.
