What are these times coming to? Can music videos have continuity and solidify further progressions of the art of visual presentation, or are they just burlap bags bursting at the seams with slap paste jobs just to anchor the song on MTV? We have seen some videos that transcend themselves past cheap thrills, while others simply exist as extended cellphone commercials. The best videos convey the meaning of the song, have outstanding visuals, and all the while still hold the viewers attention. Lady Gaga...let's just say...isn't one of those.
Lady Gaga's newest music video, Poker Face, is ruthless, distasteful, and completely void of any artistic quality. These fun adjectives can easily be represented all throughout the video which consequently leaves you with a very bad taste in your mouth even after just one watch. To begin with a good note, the art direction and introduction of the mood and costumes are pretty good, and you don't exactly know how the video is going to pan out. The introduction is also when the visual effects seem to really shine. Besides the badly done lightning storm background, the bright and flashy visuals are pretty good.
It doesn't take long for the video to take a new direction and get very sloppy. For one thing, the wardrobe and costumes steadily got worse and worse, ranging from road warrior armor to iconic space suits from the 60's. The choreography is abysmal. It doesn't follow the music very well and cinematic cuts during these scenes are amateur at best. Following the bad dance sequence is an unneeded poker scene (yeah, like the song is really about poker). The whole music video then unintentionally turns satirical, representing exactly what it means to be unsexy.
It's too bad, because when I saw the dogs and the visuals in the intro I thought, "this could be something worth watching." It does have a flashy package but the overall feel you get from the video is pointless. If the rest of the video would have been built off the first 40 seconds, removed the dance scenes, and was made less raunchy it could have been entertaining. Lady Gaga you have been warned.
